CL Best XI (Nov. 3-4)
Goalkeeper: Hugo Lloris (Lyon)
Hugo Lloris showed Liverpool fans why he is France’s number one keeper. While the Reds poured on the pressure he stood firm and made some brilliant saves early on against Kuyt, Torres, and Voronin. It took a wonder-strike from Babel to finally beat him.
Centre Back: Lucio (Internazionale)
The Brazilian defender was everywhere against Dynamo Kiev. He didn’t put a foot wrong at the back and continued to make penetrating runs going forward. Bayern Munich must be kicking themselves after selling him to Inter over the summer.Centre Back: Roman Sharonov (FK Rubin Kazan)
Kazan stymied Barcelona again and Sharonov lead their organized defence. The likes of Messi, Ibrahimovich, and Iniesta could not find the back of the net for a second straight game against the Russian champions.
Right Back: Maicon (Internazionale)
Maicon continued to show why he is considered one of the top right backs in the world. He tirelessly stampeded up and down the right flank and caused problems for Dynamo Kiev.
Left Back: Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal)
Gibbs played his first Champions League game since his poor performance against Manchester United last year. The 20 year old terrorized AZ Alkmaar’s backline.
Centre Midfielder: Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal)
Fabregas is truly in the best form of his life. The Spaniard scored his seventh and eighth goals of the season and truly shone against Alkmaar.Left Midfielder: Andrei Arshavin (Arsenal)
The Russian eclipsed Fabregas’ two goals with three assists and perhaps his best game in the Gunner’s shirt. His passes were perfect and he created chance after chance for his teammates.
Right Midfielder: Marco Marchionni (Fiorentina)
Marchionni scored a goal and set up a goal in the Viola’s 5-2 victory against Debreceni.
Centre Forward: Andriy Shevchenko (Dynamo Kiev)
Despite finding himself on the losing side against Inter, Shevchenko was a constant threat up front. His goal may have been lucky to loop over Julio Cesar but there is no doubt that the Ukrainian deserved one.
Left Striker: Sergio Aguero (Atletico Madrid)
Aguero gave new meaning to the name “super sub”. The Argentine came on after 54 minutes to score not one but two brilliant goals.
Right Striker: Alberto Gilardino (Fiorentina)
The Italian was influential in Fiorentina’s win. He scored once and had an assist continuing his stellar form for both club and country.
